Beagles are easily identifiable by their enormous floppy ears, big hazel-coloured eyes, and the bright white tip on their tail. These fun-loving animals generally are full of personality, cute, calm, companionable, highly intelligent, and first-rate hunting dogs. Originating in England as scent-hounds, they’re small yet sturdy, boast a brilliant nose, and love nothing more than running (and sniffing) around in the outdoors.

How long do Beagles live?

The average lifespan of Beagles is 12 years. However, they can live up to 15 years.

How big do Beagles get?

There are two varieties of Beagles, each with slightly different sizes. The smaller of the two stands under 33cm (13 inches) at the shoulder, whereas the larger sits around 38cm (15 inches). They can weigh between 8 to 14kg.

Beagles shed their fur all year round.

Should I get a Beagle?

Beagles are a popular choice for first-time dog owners and families with younger children because of their tendency to be adaptable, calm and easy-going.

They need exercise and attention to stay healthy and happy, as well as training and socialisation. Thanks to their size, they can live comfortably in smaller homes, such as an apartment or unit, but they also need to be taken out for regular walks.

Beagles are renowned for their endearing personality. Bred as scent-hounds, they also thrive in the outdoors, tend to be high-energy pets, love to dig and have a habit of following their nose.

Beagles are also pack animals, so they can be incredibly sociable, friendly, and affectionate. These traits make them ideal for loving families. However, the opposite side of the coin is that they have a propensity to develop separation anxiety when they’re left alone.

Beagles are also notoriously stubborn, which can make training them a challenge. They also have a reputation for being louder than other dogs, which could be problematic in busy locations with lots of neighbours nearby.

Taking care of a Beagle

Grooming

Beagles shed their fur throughout the year. They can be simple to groom and may require very little professional grooming to remain in good condition. Brushing them twice a week and bathing them 3 to 4 times a year could suffice.

Take special care of their ears. Long and floppy, they’re prone to infections, which means weekly ear care can be beneficial. Ask your vet for practical information on this matter.

Exercise

Beagles can be high energy dogs. As a puppy, try playing with them every day alongside short walks (to protect their growing bodies). In adulthood, your Beagle should get a minimum of 1 hour exercise per day. From hunting to hiking, they’ll be in their element in the outdoors.

Diet

Beagles love their food. So much so, in fact, that they can be susceptible to obesity. As a result, it’s important to pay attention to their portion sizes. Your vet will be able to advise on the best food type and quantity for this breed.

Common Beagle health conditions

Like most dog breeds, Beagles are susceptible to certain health conditions. Here are some examples:

Ear and eye infections

These dogs can be vulnerable to ear and eye infections. This could be prevented by cleaning their ears with a wet cotton bud. Keeping the eye area gently and frequently cleaned can also help to avoid eye infections.

Epilepsy and Seizures

Epilepsy can start in Beagles from around 6 months of age. Seek advice from your vet on how to manage the condition. If it’s severe enough, they may prescribe special medication to keep your Beagle healthy throughout its life.
