Frequently asked questions

You can purchase a policy after leaving your home in Australia, however, there is a 72-hour waiting period before cover for any events begins. In addition, if you purchase while you're travelling, you must purchase cover up to the date you will return to your home in Australia - we don’t offer cover for only the middle portion of your trip.

If you have an existing Everyday Travel Insurance policy that will end whilst you are travelling, and you purchase a new policy before that period of insurance ends, so there is no gap between periods of insurance, then the waiting period will not apply to that new policy.

Where possible, you must obtain documentation from the airline carrier or tour operator that verifies a delay or cancellation took place and includes details such as the reason/s for the delay and length of delay.

Travel must be delayed by at least six hours to meet the criteria for all Everyday Travel Insurance policies. If you know you'll be stuck at the airport for more than six hours you should contact the airline carrier or tour operator in the first instance to seek a refund, credit, or some form of financial compensation or arrangement specific to your needs.

If you do need to submit a claim for a travel delay, you must contact us to submit your claim as soon as possible.

There are any number of reasons people have to cancel their holidays, even at the last minute.

If you have to unexpectedly cancel your trip because of any one of the specific events listed in the PDS, Everyday Travel Insurance offers cover for the non-refundable costs of your trip and the travel agent cancellation fees, or the costs to rearrange your trip (provided the rearrangement cost is less than the amount you would have incurred had you cancelled your trip).

To submit a claim online, simply follow the below instructions:

Log into your My Insurance Portal account or create an account

  • Access your Travel Insurance policy by clicking the Travel Portal tile
  • Select "My Claims" and click on "Make a claim"
  • Tell us what happened and the expenses you're claiming
  • Check your email for relevant supporting documents to upload
  • Submit your claim and our team will be in contact

If your condition is automatically covered, or we’ve accepted and added it to your Certificate of Insurance as a specified medical condition, cover is available for those conditions under our plans.

This cover includes:

  • Cancellation and additional expenses
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Evacuation to medical facilities
  • Repatriation back home to Australia

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance is designed to help with those unexpected events that can occur while travelling but doesn’t cover everything – some things we don’t cover include:

  • A loss arising from any existing medical condition of you, a member of the travelling party or a non-travelling close relative or business partner, which is NOT automatically covered, which you did not disclose and which is not an accepted specified medical condition.
  • Any illness or death that arises from a metastatic or terminal prognosis that was made prior to the issue of the Certificate of Insurance.
  • A loss arising from any condition for which you have declined treatment or further investigation recommended by a medical practitioner.
  • Any medical treatment or care that is not required as an emergency, or any alternative therapy, health spa or rehabilitation centre costs, unless it has been agreed to by us.
  • Elective or cosmetic treatment or surgery that is not medically necessary, or any loss arising from these treatments or their complications.

Refer to the PDS for the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply.

If you choose to travel to a region despite government warnings, you may not be covered. It is important to understand that while a destination has a 'Do Not Travel' warning issued by the Australian Government in place, our travel insurance won't cover a loss that arises if you: travel to, plan to travel to; or choose to remain in that country or region.

If the Australian Government have issued a warning of 'Reconsider your need for travel' or 'All but essential travel' for the region you are travelling to, then you can travel and cover will be provided under the terms of your policy. Be sure to monitor any changes to government advice and risk status.

Please research the area(s) you are travelling to and read the latest government advice at smartraveller.gov.au  to see if your planned travel is affected.
