Planning a trip, whether domestic or international, involves many considerations, and ensuring you have adequate travel insurance is crucial, especially if you have existing medical conditions.

Why medical coverage matters.

Unexpected illnesses or injuries can occur while travelling, and medical costs can be significant. Travel insurance with medical coverage can help protect you financially in these situations. However, understanding the terms and conditions, particularly regarding existing medical conditions, is essential before purchasing a policy.

What are existing medical conditions?

A existing medical condition is any health issue you were aware of before buying your travel insurance policy. This can include conditions that are:

Chronic.

Displaying symptoms.

Under investigation.

Pending follow-up, consultation, treatment, or surgery.

Metastatic or terminal.

Conditions where you have had treatment, medication prescribed, or surgery in the six months prior to buying the policy.

Domestic and international travel insurance: medical coverage and existing medical conditions.

For travel within Australia, Everyday Travel Insurance offers different plans: Comprehensive Domestic, Standard Domestic, and Cancellation and Deposit. It's crucial to note that the Standard Domestic and Cancellation and Deposit plans do not offer cover for existing medical conditions unless they are on the automatically covered list. For overseas trips, Everyday Travel Insurance offers Comprehensive, Standard, Basic, and Frequent Traveller plans. Similar to domestic policies, the Standard and Basic plans do not offer cover for existing medical conditions unless they are on the automatically covered list.

Comprehensive (domestic) & comprehensive and frequent traveller plans (international).

These plans allows you to apply for cover for your existing medical conditions.

You'll need to complete a medical screening assessment.

If approved, your existing medical conditions can be added to your policy as specified medical conditions, which will require an additional premium.

If you do not disclose a existing medical condition, you will not be covered for any claims arising from that condition.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy itself is not considered a existing medical condition, but pregnancy related illnesses must have developed unexpectedly after you bought your policy and there is no cover for any existing medical condition related to your pregnancy, unless it has been added to your policy as a specified medical condition following a medical screening.

What to look for when choosing travel insurance.

When choosing travel insurance, here are key areas of medical coverage to consider:

Coverage for medical expenses.

Make sure your policy provides sufficient coverage for medical expenses, including hospitalisation, surgery, and emergency medical evacuation.

Coverage for existing medical conditions.

If you have any existing medical conditions, check if your policy covers them.

Medical evacuation and repatriation.

This covers transportation and accommodation costs to return you to your home in Australia, or another destination of the insurer's choice, if medically necessary.

Practical Advice for Travellers.

Declare all existing medical conditions: Always declare your existing medical conditions when purchasing travel insurance. Failure to do so can result in your claims being denied.

Complete medical screening: If your condition is not automatically covered, complete the medical screening process at the time of purchase.

Obtain written confirmation: If you develop a new condition before your trip, get written confirmation from your doctor that you are fit to travel.

Read the PDS carefully: Familiarise yourself with the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to determine if the product is right for your needs.

Keep documentation: Retain all documentation such as medical certificates, itemised medical accounts, original receipts, and any other paperwork that may be required when making a claim.

Keep your policy information handy: when you travel, keep your policy information with you at all times. This will make it easier to make a claim if you need to.
