Poodles have a lifespan of 12 - 15 years.

How big do Poodles get?

Poodles usually reach their full weight and height by two years old. Healthy male and female Poodles are between 45 – 60 cm tall and weigh between 20 to 32 kgs.

Do Poodles shed?

Poodles have a single coat and shed a low amount.

Despite the various sizes Poodles come in, all types have distinctive traits. Instead of fur coats, Poodles have ‘hair’ coats that continue to grow with minimal shedding, making them an ideal breed for people that have allergies.

Taking care of a Poodle

Grooming

Despite a low shedding coat, Poodles require a lot of maintenance with daily brushing. It’s recommended to groom your poodle every 3-6 weeks to keep their coat healthy and clean. Grooming requires brushing, bathing and clipping, which can be done professionally, or at home with a little bit of practice.

Exercise

Poodles have medium to high exercise needs, so aim to walk them 60 minutes per day. While poodles can adapt to smaller living environments, you can mitigate the lack of space with exercise and play in parks.

Diet

Like most dogs, Poodles need a diet rich in protein to maintain their health. Lean meats like chicken and lamb with a mix of vegetables can provide a balanced meal that will keep your Poodle going. If you’re feeding your Poodle kibble or dry dog food, opt for high-quality that contain good nutrients.

Common Poodle health conditions

Like most dog breeds, Poodles can be susceptible to certain health conditions. Here are some examples:

Hip dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a hereditary skeletal condition seen in medium to large dog breeds. The condition creates a deformity in a dog’s hips as they grow, leading to reduced mobility and range of motion. Early signs of hip dysplasia in a dog can be limping, abnormal walking patterns, and loss of muscle in the hind legs.

Luxating Patella

Luxating Patella is a common hereditary condition that can affect a Poodle’s kneecaps, causing them to dislocate or slip out of place. If your Poodle starts limping or avoids using a specific leg, that’s a sign they may be experiencing pain from this condition. It’s best to consult your vet if you start noticing any symptoms.
